Wrong then, or wrong now?

Wrong then, or wrong now?

In 1988, President George Bush said:

"Some would say it's soft and insufficiently tough to care about troubled children. But where is it written, that we must act as if we do not care, as if we are not moved? Well, I am moved. I want a kinder, gentler nation."

Talking about taking care of each other.

President Ronald Reagan said:

  • "You can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone."
  • "There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit."

I offer these quotes so as to show contrast with what Republicans believed in and espoused in the recent past. These were positive attributes, principles to stand on and be proud of. Compare and contrast with some more recent Republican quotes:

  • If I don’t get elected … it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”
  • “Well, revenge does take time. I will say that. And sometimes revenge can be justified"
  • “If you had one really violent day … one rough hour—and I mean real rough—the word will get out, and it will end immediately.”
  • “Maybe he should have been roughed up..."
  • "You've got to deny, deny, deny and push back on these women. If you admit to anything and any culpability, then you're dead. … You've got to be strong. You've got to be aggressive. You've got to push back hard. You've got to deny anything that's said about you. Never admit."
  • "She gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her… wherever."
  • "Does she have a good body? No. Does she have a fat ass? Absolutely."
  • "She does have a very nice figure ... if [she] weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her."
  • "You can do anything ... Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."

These are but a small snippet of the long list of dripping vitriol spewed by Donald Trump.

So I ask those few remaining Republicans – were you wrong back then, when you supported Reagan's "shining city on a hill" where he said America should be a "tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, with open doors for anyone with the will and heart to get here"... did you support that back then, Republicans? If so, how do you have the cognitive dissonance to now support this:

  •  'Why is it we only take people from shithole countries, right?'
  • "We always take people from Somalia, places that are a disaster, right? Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime. The only thing they’re good at is going after ships."
  • “You have a bunch of bad hombres down there, you aren’t doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn’t, so I just might send them down to take care of it.”
  • "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize… I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,"

How have you allowed yourselves to be led this far down, this fast? I know many Republicans, I was one myself until John McCain lost. To me, that was when the GOP lost their moral compass and sold their souls in exchange for religious power and authoritarian greed. Repent, please.
